Grameenphone, jointly with Sight Savers International, organized a free Eye Camp at the VARD Eye Hospital, of Ilaspur, Goalabazer, Balagonj, Sylhet on December 09, 2007.
This is the sixth free Eye Camp organized jointly by Grameenphone and Sight Saver International. Through these camps, conducted in rural parts of Bangladesh, where people have little or no access to quality healthcare, Grameenphone aims to provide free eye care services to the economically disadvantaged people of the area. The VARD Eye Hospital, which is a local NGO is the implementing partner in this eye camp.
Mr. Harun-or-Rashid Khan, Deputy Commissioner, Sylhet, was present at the inaugural session as the Chief Guest. Mr. Amranul Hoque Kamal, Executive Director, VARD and Mr. Sheikh Matiur Rahman, UNO, Balaganj were also present as the special guest. Dr. Arkanul Islam, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility and Mr. Juber Md. Ahmed, Head of Sylhet Region, Grameenphone were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rashid expressed his appreciation of Grameenphone's efforts to come to the aide of the underprivileged people of Bangladesh.
More than 1100 patients arrived for care at the VARD eye Hospital. All patients were given routine examinations and prescriptions for refractive error were given to those who required it. Among them 175 patients were referred for and administered Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) or cataract surgeries.
As a conscientious corporate citizen of Bangladesh, Grameenphone has always recognized its social responsibilities, especially to the less privileged sections of the society, putting special focus on the healthcare needs of the country. Earlier this year Grameenphone, jointly with NSDP of USAID, launched the nationwide safe motherhood project, "Grameenphone Safe Motherhood and Infant Care" through which, GP will provide free yet comprehensive healthcare services to not only pregnant and new mothers, but also their infants.
